Frequently asked questions
Why am I receiving an invoice after so long?
The obligation reflected in this invoice is not new. The charges were incurred during the applicable period and were legally due at that time. The passage of time does not eliminate or forgive the underlying obligation.
In many cases, accounts are reviewed, audited, or transferred for collection after the original billing period. This may occur due to administrative processing, reconciliation of records, changes in account status, or referral of the matter for enforcement.
Once the balance was verified as outstanding, it was forwarded for collection in accordance with Ohio law. As a result, you are now receiving formal notice and an opportunity to resolve the balance.
Why do I owe the Division of Parole & Community Service?
Supervision fees are assessed on a monthly basis during the period you were under supervision with the Division of Parole & Community Services. These fees are required by Ohio law and were incurred while you were actively supervised.
Our records indicate that some or all of the supervision fees assessed during your supervision period remain unpaid. As a result, the outstanding balance was referred for collection.
Once referred, the Ohio Attorney General is required to add applicable interest and collection costs as permitted by Ohio law. These amounts are in addition to the original supervision fees and continue to accrue until the balance is paid in full.
Can I avoid my wages being garnished?
Yes. Wage garnishment can be avoided as long as the balance is paid in full or you enter into an approved payment plan.
To prevent further enforcement action, you must either remit payment for the full outstanding balance or submit a request for a payment plan. Payment plan requests are reviewed and must be approved by this office. Until a payment plan is approved and you remain in compliance with its terms, enforcement actions may continue.
If my case gets to wage garnishment, will my balance due be increased?
Yes. If your case proceeds to wage garnishment, the balance due will increase to include applicable court costs, in addition to the original balance, accrued interest, and collection costs. These additional amounts are assessed as part of the legal process required to obtain and enforce a garnishment order.
To avoid these additional costs, payment in full or entry into an approved payment plan should be completed before garnishment proceedings begin.
My wages are being garnished, can i stop the wage garnishment?
Yes. A wage garnishment may be stopped upon payment of the full outstanding balance. Once a garnishment has been initiated, the balance due includes the original obligation, accrued interest, collection costs, and court costs.
Upon receipt and processing of full payment, this office will take the necessary steps to release the garnishment in accordance with Ohio law. Until the balance is paid in full, the garnishment will remain in effect.
